Fall and Furnace

It’s that time of year! Fall is right around the corner and when the temperature drops the furnace comes on.

Before you turn your furnace on for the first time, there is one thing you should do, change the furnace filter. It is recommended that furnace filters get changed once every three months, or every month if you have a pet.   

Changing the furnace filters has a lot of advantages. By changing the furnace filters on a regular schedule. You can extend the life of your HVAC system, lower your energy bill, and maintain a healthier air quality in your home.  

 How can changing your furnace filters do all this?   

  • By changing your furnace filters. Your HVAC system does not have to work so hard to produce the same results. This helps raise the longevity of your system.
  • It also uses less energy this way, thus lowering your energy bill.
  • Finally changing the furnace filters on a regular schedule helps maintain a healthier air quality within your home.  

This is because when you have clean air filters, allergens such as dust and pet dandruff will not get recirculated into your home through your HVAC system. Built up allergens can linger for months even after the old filter has been replaced. Allergens can cause health effects.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

  • Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
  • Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
  • Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
  • Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

4 Ways To Reduce Christmas Tree Mold Levels

Live Christmas trees may bring more than the fresh pine scent of the holiday season into homes.  With most trees cut in advance of the holidays and stored in a moist environment for fresh keeping, this makes them a likely mold source. Here are a few tips to help you cut the Christmas mold level in your home, without giving up the fresh tree:

Limit The Time You Leave Your Tree Up

  • The longer the tree is inside of your home, the higher the mold level may be.  If those in your household are prone to mold allergies, but don’t want to give up the fresh Christmas tree, consider putting the tree up Christmas Eve and taking it down on New Year’s Day.  Try to keep a live tree in your home between 4-7 days at maximum.

Wash Your Tree:

  • Before bringing the freshly cut tree inside of your home, wash it first using the garden hose.  Set the nozzle to a hard-spray level to get into all of those little nooks and crannies of the trunk.  Then, wipe the trunk thoroughly with a solution of warm water and bleach (1 part bleach to 20 parts water).  Let it dry in the sun before bringing it inside of your home.

Use an Air Purifier:

  • Run an air purifier in the same room as the fresh tree.  Cleaner air is key during the holidays, and helps to reduce your mold exposure and lessen the effects of your tree allergies.

Go Fake:

  • The best way to avoid the mold infestation is to buy an artificial tree.  Unless you store your artificial tree inside of a sealed plastic bag, it will still need a good shaking outside when it’s brought out of storage each year to relieve it of dust.  Also, store all of your Christmas ornaments and decorations in plastic containers (instead of cardboard ones) to keep the dust off of them.

New Years Resolutions

As this year comes to an abrupt end and the new year quickly approaches, several things come in perspective. The first being that you managed to survive the year in its entirety and the second being the things that you want to change or make happen in the upcoming year. Modern day people call these things, New Years resolutions. Sometimes these changes we want to make are hard but they can impact our life greatly and really put us in places to succeed: economically, physically, emotionally, or any combination of the three. 

That's why as the this year comes to a close and 2020 is set to begin, I plan to not only make changes to my life to better myself but also to better my career as a marketing representative. I am going to continue to make SERVPRO a household name around my area and continue to improve how I help the customers, my SERVPRO franchise and most importantly myself. 

Each new year is about growth and moving passed where you were previously. Stand firm by your resolutions and work hard to achieve them because you never know the amount of good it can bring to your life and the people around you. 

Preemptive Action

Because of our quick response time and speed in mediating the problem, SERVPRO is the way to go in case of emergency, but what do you do until SERVPRO arrives on the scene to help you out? Preemptive action by the person experiencing the problem, when they are able to do something, is very important in order to avoid further damage to the effected area. Sometimes preemptive action is hard because the problem may be too great or potentially toxic if exposed to the area, and with these problems there's not much an ordinary bystander can do, however, with certain incidents such as a leaky or faulty water heater tank for example, you can take preemptive action by moving things that can be damaged by water away from the site and even implementing towels to get the excess water up before more damage is caused.

Pumpkin Carving Halloween

With summer time being over and the leaves beginning to change for some it’s time to cuddle up with some hot apple cider and a blanket but for others it’s time to begin celebrating Halloween.

Halloween can be considered one of people’s favorite holidays. It’s a Holiday filled with frights and cool nights with lots of activities to share with friends and family. You may decide to go to a haunted house, corn maze, or centuries old pumpkin carving. Exactly how it originated is still a mystery; it’s not a mystery on why people love carving these every year. Here are a few things to remember to assure your pumpkin carving night is safe and fun.

  • Wear gloves when using carving tools and knives
  • Clear any debris from the place you plan on putting a pumpkin
  • Don’t place a pumpkin in a high traffic area to prevent from being bumped
  • Consider using candle alternatives (Battery operated candles or LED lights)
  • Don’t place lids on pumpkins if there is not at least 2 inches between the lid and the flame

Grilling Safety Tips

Now that weather is getting nicer and the outdoors are becoming more inviting, people’s time is going to be spent outside more. Cookouts are a great way to spend time with friends and family and get away from the indoors.  Here are some tips so you can enjoy the warm summer days and without worrying about the fire hazards that come with grilling.

  • Set up your grill on a level surface at outdoors least 10 feet away from any buildings or debris.
  • Regularly clean your grill.
  • Check your propane tank hose for any leaks by applying a soapy water solution to the hose and turning on the gas. If there’s a leak, bubbles will begin to form.
  • If the flame goes out in a gas grill, turn off the gas and grill and wait a recommended 5 minutes before relighting.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing or other articles that could easily fall into the flames.
  • Make aware that the grill is or will be in use. Instruct children to be cautious and keep animals away. Grills take at least an hour to completely cool down.
  • With charcoal grills, if the flame goes down or out, do not use starter fluid to reignite the flame
  • If the fire is beginning to get large and needs to put out, baking soda is helpful with putting out grease fires and fire extinguishers are good for other fires as well as throwing sand onto the fire.
